What Is Skim Coating and When Do You Need It?
Skim coating smooths damaged or uneven walls before painting. Here is how it works.
What it is
- Skim coating spreads a thin layer of joint compound over a wall or ceiling to create a smooth, even surface.
- It hides cracks, patched areas, uneven plaster and old texture.
When it helps
- Walls with many patches, hairline cracks or peeling paint.
- Prewar plaster that has settled or been repaired many times.
- Walls where a fresh coat of paint alone would still show every flaw.
How we do it
- Remove loose paint and repair damage.
- Apply joint compound in thin coats and let it dry.
- Sand smooth, prime and paint so the finish looks seamless.
